The Fourth Is Not Canceled: Celebrating Freedom, Gratitude, and Hope

I recently spoke with a teenager who was checking the weather forecast. In our area, storms were predicted for Saturday evening, July 4th. He looked up and said, “They’ll have to cancel the 4thof July.” Of course, he meant the fireworks and festivities planned for that night.

His words stayed with me. They reminded me how easy it is to think of the 4th of July only as a day for grilling, barbecues, beaches, vacations, and fireworks. Those traditions are wonderful, but I wonder how many of us—especially our children and teenagers—truly understand the meaning behind the celebration.

And what about us as adults? Do we pause long enough to remember what Independence Day represents? Do we reflect on the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the courage it took to stand for freedom? Do we appreciate the sacrifices made by those who came before us? And do we stand with people in our own country and around the world who are still longing, striving, and struggling for freedom today?

A wise person once said, “The best predictor of tomorrow is the decisions we make today.” May we choose to honor the past by protecting the future. May we celebrate freedom not only with words and fireworks, but with courage, compassion, service, and responsibility. Let us get busy. Let us become the change we hope to see in the world. Each of us can make a difference, beginning right where we are—at home, in our communities, on the job, and in the everyday places where kindness, justice, and hope are needed most.

We may have stormy weather this year on the 4th in my area. The fireworks may be delayed, and the skies may not cooperate. But no—the 4th of July is not canceled. Freedom is not canceled. Gratitude is not canceled. Hope is not canceled. We will still celebrate America’s freedom and the remarkable milestone of 250 years. Please share your thoughts:

1. How will you celebrate Independence Day this year?

2. What will you do to help make freedom, hope, and opportunity more real for someone else?
